History of Raeford Presbyterian Church
The first Session minutes were recorded on September 3, 1899. Twenty-seven of the first chartered members came by letter from Bethel Presbyterian Church. The new church first met in the Raeford Institute building. In 1900, the first building was constructed with members contributing lumber, supplies and labor. Both the Methodist and Baptist congregations were invited to hold their services, in our new church space.
Pledge cards were first issued for 1908-1909, where membership continued to grow. The first bulletins were published for service on September 6, 1925. The first service in the present building was held on April 1, 1923. In commemoration of our first service, a commemorative service was held on April 1, 2023.
On October 23, 1943, fire destroyed the sanctuary. The sanctuary was then rebuilt. It was completed on December 23, 1945. During the rebuilding of the sanctuary, the pipe organ with cathedral bells was installed and used for the first time. The grand opening for the church's new addition was celebrated on 22 June 2008. Ropp Hall was then dedicated to Pastor Emeritus John C. Ropp, on July 13th, 2008. Ropp Hall continues to provide space for Bible study, conferences and meetings.
With these editions, the church continued to grow. Its attendance averaged 450 members by 1957. That same year, a nursery was established for our morning service. Our Sunday service started at seven am and upon completion, members would frequently enjoy lunch on the church grounds, following our morning service. RPC has been blessed and enriched by ministers since 1899 who have been both spiritual and inspirational teachers, guides and leaders.
Raeford Presbyterian Church was also a leader in establishing Camp Monroe. Camp Monroe continues to provide Christian education not only for youth, but also for adults through conferences and retreats. Throughout its history, Raeford Presbyterian Church has also supported missionaries through such programs as Faith Ministry and children’s programs, such as the Samaritan’s Purse.
